A really good air purifier should to the trick. I have an Austin Air Healthmate. These things move and clean hundreds of cubic ft of air per hour. Runs about $450. I use it regularly in my apartment because I also have a “little one”, and it is great. I have also used it after some very dusty reno work. Left it on for a few hours and it really cleared the air.
Maybe the industrial air washer someone told you about is something else, but we had a #4 fuel oil spill in the fall which – although harmless – smelled awful.
The “air cleaner” was simply a HUUUUGE fan. We set up smaller fans in our front cellar well, and set the HUUUGE fan (it was the size of a tractor wheel) up in a door at the back of the cellar to suck the air out.
There was a commercial cleaner who tried to talk us into paying thousands of dollars to pay for his system which was essentially also a HUGGGE fan with lots of dryer vents running from the front to the back of the house to bring air in the front of the house and out the back.
If your house smells, just open the windows all over the house – making sure you keep a drip going in faucets in the house so the pipes don’t freeze.
Ventilation is a sure fire “air cleaner” and its free.
All that said, the house still smelled until we pulled all of the crap out of the cellar and cleaned under it.
So to conclude – 1) clean the hell out of your renovated house and 2) ventilate
For “little ones”, a vinegar/water rinse on surfaces is good.
