recommendation for chimney contractor?
We need a new chimney liner, and possibly masonry work in the chimney area, for our 4-story brownstone. This chimney is for the building’s gas boiler. Can anyone recommend someone based either on personal satisfaction, or excellent reputation? We have already received an estimate from “The Chimney Doctor” but it seems high.

Don’t use National Chimney. They had good recommendations on this site, so we were looking forward to using them. They didn’t show for three scheduled appointments in a row. They put the address in wrong once, the UN traffic stopped them another time, and then they just didn’t show up and never returned our phone calls requesting an explanation.
Instead, we used Manny LaSalle. He was great. He showed up twice and gave us a quote within a week. We have yet to do the work, but are hoping his quality is equally noteworthy. His number is: 917-292-1825
Oh, wait, I see that I mistakenly presumed that you wanted to convert fireplaces to wood-burning. My bad. The $1500 price we got to reline our boiler flue was somewhat predicated on the larger scope of the overall project, but maybe they’d do it for that for you, too. Our place also is 4 stories. Cheers.
We did this a couple months ago, and posted a great collection of photos about the process right here:

We used Fireside, and we were very pleased. Their number is posted in one of the above links. Converted two fireplaces to wood-burning and relined both flues with stainless. Opted for chimney-top mounted flue closures, and like them very much. Fireplaces were $4000 apiece. Also relined flue for boiler, which was another $1500. Expensive, but I think this is about the going rate. Both fireplaces draft great, and the crew was clean, taped off the area vigilantly with plastic, and did great work. Happy wintering.

I’m looking too. Many people on this site have given A&A high marks. They advertise right here on the forum
