I’m considering 2 different houses. One in north bed stuy on Throop at Quincy (11221 area code) and another on Macon at Nostrand (11216). Which of these area is better? Do you have any say on this Brownstoner?

  1. We had bid on 2 houses-one in sothstuy where we are now and one on Greene street and Nostrand. The subway line was a major factor for me as was the fact that south stuy has all the basic amenities that Park Slopers take for granted but that are lacking elsewhere (i.e. a grocery store, dry cleaners, pet food store-etc.). Its also not so desolate at night. That said, it would be nice if there were more restaurants on fulton. Anyway–on a whole–I have to agree that SouthStuy is the way to go. Good Luck

  2. 11:35, maybe it’s all in my mind, but it seems to me like that part of Bed Stuy was never really that bad to begin with. (I’ve heard otherwise.) There are lots of old timers who take really good care of their homes, the amenities are a bit better, it just seems like there are less scars from the bad days. Also, I have to believe that because I chose that end. 😉

  3. We live on Halsey between Nostrand and Marcy and LOVE it. It is 2 blocks from the A express, all the shops on Fulton mentioned above, and the mix of people is fantastic. My sense is the Quincy/Troop is just a little behind as the projects are near there. Welcome!!

  4. We’re right around the corner from Nostrand/Macon. We chose this end because of the train, amenities and feel of the area. I think North Stuy is coming along nicely, but South/West is much further along. I love it there! And the best part is that I’ll be your neighbor. (and Kush delivers)

  5. I live north of south stuy, but further west than tompkins–more over by stuyvesant.

*I would avoid the G or the C trains which will make you feel stranded, and look toward either the J or the A. I actually really like the J train, it’s very regular and convenient, no complaints.

*I love that area down by the Utica stop on the A train, it’s got great architecture and good shops. Olivino is a good wine store, bread stuy is a pretty good cafe, Petit Bassam sucks but you are closeish to Shakoor’s sweet tooth and not *that* far from le Toukelour, which is really good. Brownstone books is good if you have kids.

*What I also like about this area (east and south in Bed Stuy) is that it’s less volatile feeling than the area over by the park. That zone near Quincy and Throop is very much about projects + hipsters + young white homeowners + buppies. This creates a little tension, which is understandable and not dangerous-feeling, but can add a little existential weight.

Over where I am and down in Stuy Heights, it feels like there is more home ownership in general, more black home ownership specifically, and everyone’s generally got less of a chip on their shoulder and is more friendly. I really like my neighbors over here and enjoy getting to know people and the vibe is very easy. Walking over toward the park is *certainly* not dangerous, but it doesn’t feel as relaxed and happy as walking down stuyvesant.

To make up my mind, I would go walk around at night in both neighborhoods, and go buy things in both neighborhoods, and strike up conversations with as many neighbors as possible. You’ll know where you belong, where you’ll be happiest.

  6. Hands down, Macon & Nostrand is a much better location for transportation, shopping etc. Although I agree with the above poster that it is quite busy at that intersection.

  7. I don’t know about those specific blocks, but Macon and Nostrand is a much better location in my opinion. You would be really close to the A and C trains, which give you quick and convenient access to Manhattan and other parts of Brooklyn. On Quincy and Throop your closest train will be the G (not that great), and it will be a longer walk. Also the Foodtown on Fulton near Nostrand is a really good supermarket (for Brooklyn). I moved to the south part of Bed-Stuy (near the Utica Ave stop) 6 months ago and really love it. All the blocks on Macon, Halsey, Hancock, Jefferson, are beautiful. In north Bed-Stuy it’s more hit or miss, some blocks are great and some are not. The only problem I would see on Macon and Nostrand is that you would be near a very busy intersection (Fulton/Nostrand) so it could be noisy.
