North Bed Stuy v. South
I’m considering 2 different houses. One in north bed stuy on Throop at Quincy (11221 area code) and another on Macon at Nostrand (11216). Which of these area is better? Do you have any say on this Brownstoner?

WestBed is the A line. Nostrand Ave.
Westbed sucks re: transportation. I would get me on the A line, or the J is not bad.
i would still put my $$ into westbed. close to the city/close to williamsburg. this area is full of good possibilities and is already a stable community with high ownership spanning many generations. i’m just not buying that “tension” discussion. it exists anywhere that you let it. say hello to your neighbors-be an active member of the neighborhood and people will treat you with respect.
I posted that comment about the volatility over by the park, it’s a little obtuse.
What I mean is not that I don’t love diversity (I’m white, living on a block with a lot of black people, an asian family, and a few other white folks).
It’s more about the economic reality of gentrification, and the expectations it gives the people on the street that I am talking about.
Over here on my end of the stuy, there seems to be less tension about gentrification, which IME makes getting to know your neighbors and be a part of the community a little easier. People aren’t afraid of losing their apartments, so it’s not just that you will get to know your neighbors or the people on your block, but people tend to exhibit a lack of tension in general when in the presence of someone who looks like a gentrifier. I think that this is because people own more out here, and I also think it’s because the wave of gentrification is tending to move from Clinton Hill to the east.
I have friends who live over by Tiny Cup who tell me that they come up against more people “protecting turf” with stares and such. All I am saying is that I don’t ever really feel that way unless I am in their neighborhood or unless I walk my dog in the park. But not every day, and I have never come across anything that’s different than living in any other rapidly gentrifying neighborhood… I got the same stares from dominicans and Puerto Ricans in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. It’s about rising rents, it scares people and it’s understandable. The threat of rising rent scared me enough to buy something, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I had the resources to do that.
I’m pretty confused about what areas are considered west, south, east and north Bed Stuy? Can someone describe the general borderlines/blocks that make up each of these sections?
“What I also like about this area (east and south in Bed Stuy) is that it’s less volatile feeling than the area over by the park. That zone near Quincy and Throop is very much about projects + hipsters + young white homeowners + buppies. This creates a little tension, which is understandable and not dangerous-feeling, but can add a little existential weight.”
I couldn’t disagree with this statement more! I am a white homeowner in this area (westbed) and couldn’t be happier with my choice. It’s diverse, yes…but that’s exactly why we like it. Our neighbors are nothing but friendly and we all know each other. Hipsters are good, black people are good, white people are good…what’s the point? I like being close to the city. Stuy Heights is waay to far out for my taste.
I’d go for Macon/Nostrand for all of the reasons listed above. When you are coming home at night, especially in the winter, being near a subway stop, especially with 2 lines, is a blessing. Quincy/Throop is not bad, but unless you are considering houses only a couple of doors from Nostrand, and therefore a bit noisy, I’d definitely prefer Macon. I used to walk down that block every day when I lived on Jefferson, and had people I used to speak to whenever we saw each other. Very beautiful, friendly, nice block.
12:09, did they say they don’t deliver at all or not to your area? Maybe their delivery guy/gal was off for Thanksgiving weekend? I haven’t ordered from them in a few months, but they never hesitated to deliver to my house…just past Nostrand.
Good to know about Mojito though! When I first moved to the area, Ft Greene and Myrtle Ave restaurants wouldn’t deliver. I don’t think I asked Mojito come to think of it.
rh- I tried to deliver from Kuch tonight and I’m on Hancock off Nostrand, and Kuch said “We do not deliver” – I was so dissapointed – but then Mojito in fort green delivered and it was wonderful (the delivery guy did not seem so pleased (yet pleasant) as it was cold out and I don’t think he realized how far he had to ride that bike!)
Any event, I agree w/ you rh – just wanted to update you about Kush – but maybe they just didn’t feel me!
