looking for estimates, so i’m wondering what are the good questions to ask the floor refinishers.

is a 3rd coat typically much better than 2x?

thanks

  1. Stay away from RMD flooring. They missed staining spots, ruined the quarter round which they were supposed to replace, and sanded but completely forget to stain and finish the area under the appliances.

  2. I called RMD for an estimate and they said there is no reason for me to leave the house during the process since I requested a water-based finish. I want water-based because I’m dealing with immune/health problems and was wondering it it is true that it is safe to stay in the house. Thanks.

  3. My hardwood floors have tiles glued to them. Is it worth removing the tiles to find the floor or should I put a new hardwood floor over everything? It seems tough to lift the tiles, which are probably 50 year old linoleum or even asbestos – who knows… But the neighbors wood floors are spectacular and I believe I have the same ones burried… advice please?

  4. I used RMD as well. Price was in the middle of estimates but work was great. Used water based and fumes/mess were almost nonexistant. Even my GC was impressed w/them.

  5. Our floors had tiles on them for many many years — so 2 coats wasn’t enough; the floor absorbed a lot of it. With 3 coats — the result was gorgeous.

When we get to doing the other floor, we’ll definitely have 3 coats.

  6. Ask them (and others!!!) for info about the difference between water based and oil based poly. My understanding is the former is not toxic (or not as much) but far less durable… sure something you need to look into.

  7. I used RMD flooring and they were AMAZING! I had them put down the water based poly and my floors came out fabulous! It’s alittle more expensive than the regular poly but definitely worth it! I believe they did three coats of that. If I remember correctly, they quoted 1.50 per square foot for the regular and 2.50 for the water based.
    Hope this helps!
