Sidewalks and bulging tree roots

NYC has a program for this, but we’ve been on the waiting list for more than a year and we’re getting kind of nervous that someone will trip.
Thanks for help.
OP here:
Thanks everyone. If you have numbers for the co’s you used, it’d be appreciated.
To Nyflicka, re actually speaking to someone: I spoke with Mitch Murdock, 718 965 7747. He was very realistic about there being a long list ahead of me and this was before the Bay Ridge was hit. GL.
We are having the same problem and getting the parks dept to get back to us regarding the “free” program is near impossible. Can people provide the phone # for J & L Landscaping, or anyone else for that matter? (we are not landmarked). Thanks!
J & L Landscaping did my stoop and my neighbors sidewalk that had a tree.
17 feet long, $1500 and completed in half a day.

Yes, your contractor or you must schedule the work with Parks for what’s known as root triming. That way the tree is also inspected for stability. Make sure they make the new tree pit larger or the new sidewalk will just raise up again. Legal tree pits can be almost half the width of the sidewalk. It cost us $1600 for 18′ running feet. Not landmarks area.
I went through the same a few years ago. The parks dept has to come out and cut the tree root so that it is flush with the sidewalk. They will not pay for the sidewalk. We put in a new sidewalk and it cost us $2300. We had to go through landmarks for approval of the sidewalk.
