Does anyone have any tips on finding an authentic wood brownstone door?

  1. Trying to get the word out —- I have found what I think all Brownstoners would consider a Brooklyn Jewel.

Investigating a name under a table that I stumbled onto years ago, I finally found time to find the place–and what a find it was–absolutely amazing.

After owning my brownstone for six years, imagine – hand wood carving/duplication of anything, restoration, antique replicas, as well as custom made furniture detailed for your personal taste or desires. Anything you may have missing in “this old house” – they can do. Pieces of furniture made by them was also in Oprah’s Magazine.

These gentlemen/owners are not youngsters by far, nevertheless are holding onto a tradition that will soon be past and forgotten.

  3. Isn’t sugar pine too soft for an entry door?

There wasn’t any price difference for paint grade or stain grade doors?

    Did he use insulated glass?

  4. Well, Omar said that if he was to duplicate the doors that I had out of very sturdy sugar pine, paint or varnish them, install them including hardware, rebuild the door jamb, moldings in the vestibule that he would charge me around 5,000 dollars. Hardware can be costly – you can pay 1500 dollars for nice door sets, but you can get them much cheaper though. One thing to be very careful about is not to have doors made of poplar (very prone to fungus, mold, etc.). This species is great for indoors but bad for outdoors. I assume that the cost of the doors would depend on the complexity of the design and the size of the doors.

The other company is Tamer and Tamer. They are also very professional and my friend Eddie recommends them also, but check the posts on them. They sometimes become jammed up and have big delays. Tamer Tamer (one of the brothers) is the restoration and door guy and his brother tends to do the new construction, but call Tamer and see if you can get a quote from them. From my experience, doors are very high skill projects from the construction and design to the installation. We have old buildings that are not plumb and have tricky old angles so you need a pro. I made a lot of mistakes with my doors (Omar fixed the botch job resulting from the poplar new doors I got from someone else) and the installation debacle created by the 3 stooges that tried to install them. (They wound up tilted and hanging cockeyed with bottoms planed crookedly – the cheapest is always the most expensive!!!). If the doors are well hung, there should not be drafts.

Anyway, why not get quotes from both. I like both but Omar was very responsive and a real pro.

  5. Hi donatella, I am not the OP but have been curious about this also. Do you have any idea how much this would cost, to reproduce original doors? Not sure of the size of ours but they are double doors and probably on the wider side, I’d love a ballpark figure if you know of one. Also, would the new doors be insulated well? Thanks!

  6. Yes, go see Eddie Hibbert who owns a salvage place on Greene, corner Grand. (Tues-Sat 12-6). He has many sets of old brownstone doors – you need to check sizes. If you find a set you like that you would like to have reproduced call Omar 646-541-3409, who is a great craftsman who will replicate vintage doors, moldings etc. He has a shop in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
