In the next month or two we will be having our kitchen and possibly a closet renovated in our Prospect Heights co-op. The closet holds a furnace and water heater; we will be getting a new furnace and hopefully a small ‘on demand’ water heater and turning the saved space into a small pantry. I have a few questions about the project as this is our first reno.

– are there seasonal differences in prices for contractors? Would we be better off waiting until after the holidays?

– should we have one person do both jobs?

– how much do we need to have prepared before we begin interviewing contractors? Do we need to have cabinets, counters, suppliers, etc or just general ideas?

– does anyone have recs for retailers for counters (quartz), cabinets, and other supplies? We’ve been told Mondial and Gold & Reiss but looking for others.

Any help greatly appreciated.

  1. I just had Victory Brothers, Inc. install my furnace. They were in and out in two days. Had an old oil furnace that they dismantled and carted off on day one. Day two they installed the new furnace and duct work seamlessly. Highly recommend them for your furnace job. I was going from an oil oil furnance to a more efficient oil furnace. Victory does conversions as well, if you need that.

  2. Thanks for the responses thusfar. We haven’t decided on a type of furnace and don’t know much about it yet. We have an HVAC system in the apartment. Any recomendation for types or suppliers?
    Thanks!

  3. I would call contractors now. Since it’s getting cold and wet this is their down time. Try the GC’s who advertise on this site, they all seem to be quality.
