I live in a brownstone that has a front double door (3′ x 10′) with glass windows. There is an intercom system, but no door buzzer (i.e., electric door strike). We were told that there is no system to accomodate a buzzer (electric door strike) for the type of doors we have.

First, does anyone know if a door buzzer (electric strike door) can be installed on double doors or not?

If so, is there an alternative system that can be installed?

And can anyone recommend a locksmith or handyman who can install the door buzzer in Brooklyn?

Thanks

  1. I just had to share that I called Antonio based on this recommendation and I can’t say enough about him. He came to our Clinton Hill co-op brownstone this morning (April 2008) and in under an hour, he fixed our intercom system which has been broken for years according to some residents and did it for an incredibly reasonable and fair amount. He was wonderfully pleasant, trustworthy, thorough, effective and patient. If you need a locksmith or someone to look at your intercom, Antonio Gomez of AG Locksmith is your man. His number is now 347-400-0908 and his email is aglocksmith@mac.com.

  2. Try Antonio…347-683-2644. If any one can do the job, he’s your man. Very skilled, I Been living in a co-op building for several years now. Had a couple of different companies try and come to fix our double doors and buzzer system. Every one failed to do so. Until he came alone and did quite an amazing job left the doors working like new. Highly recommended.

  3. I just did this on my brownstone reno, with 2 sets of double doors. You’ll need to open up the walls, probably quite a bit; you’ve got to figure that wiring to initiate the buzzer has to run from the doorbells, to the apartment intercoms and to the doors. And you will need to modify the doors a bit, as the wiring needs to run down the doors to the lock mechanisms…basically you create a channel for that behind the astricle on each pair of doors. Plus you need to drill a small circle through the door closest to the wall, where the wiring will run from the intercom box. My electrican and GC handled the installation. Good luck!
