In anycase, I was wondering if people had recommendations on places to get tile. The woman showed me the tile they ended up using, a beautiful penny pattern, also flat white, but I forgot to ask where she got them. I’m also looking for the flat subway tiles. Any ideas?
Nemo doesn’t sell the completely flat tile. They only sell the slightly eased edge style. It depends upon how much of a stickler you are about details vs. price point.
If you dont care about it being completely flat, subway tiles are very cheap and can be found at any tile supplier.
there’s hundreds of tile stores in the new york area, most could get this for you
We really love Bari Tile in Bayridge.
I bought my tiles at Nemo Tile — flat white hex and subway. What I liked about them was that they always had everything in stock so there was never any waiting around!
I second the suggestion of Bergen Tile. I think they have the flat (non-beveled edge), matte finish hex tile in white and black and white (but not in all black). They also have similar small square tiles. I’m not sure if they have the flat finish penny tiles though. Check out the room in the back, or just ask someone. And it’s pretty cheap – $3.00 or so a square. They can also order stuff for you, just make sure you are very specific in what you want.

Check out Bergen Tile, Flatbush and Dean.
As far as I know, Subway Ceramics and Iron Gate tile are the only two companies that make the completely flat (period appropriate) subway tile. Both are really expensive and have been ruled out as an option in my budget but if you find an alternate source, I’d love to hear about them.
A company called Lyric makes flat unglazed hex tiles. If you do a search on the net, you’ll find a few sources. Its pretty expensive too at about $8/sq foot but cheaper than the flat subways.
You can find eased edge imitations of subways, hex and pennies by nearly any manufacter for a lot less.
