The heat timer unit connected to my five story building’ relatively new weil mclain gas boiler is shot. I was very unhappy with the contractor who installed the boiler, so i’m looking for someone new to replace the heat timer. The boiler is gas fueled, but has the unusual set up of having a gun style burner, usually seen on oil burners. any suggestions?

  1. I have a lot of experience with heating systems and heat timers.Unfortunately no average plumber or contractor gives a damn about your gas consumption or your heat timer. And whats even worse there are few architects that know or care about the building envelope or heating systems as well

I have yet to meet a heat timer tech that “knows what he’s doing” the last heat timer i fixed was in my neighbors brownstone who just paid heat timer over $1800 to install a new heat timer for her gas forced hot water system. Nothng was programmed correctly and to top it all off he reused the old senors with the new unit – it was a joke.

-what is your gas consumption?(therms vs. Heating degree days per month)
    -is the boiler sealed combustion?
-do you have a Domestic hot water storage tank or a old school (read POS) stand alone gas fired hot water heater?

Anway, the heat timer is a good control when installed correctly and fine tuned to meet your heating needs. Unfortunately Heat Timer is no longer making the series HWM100 which was simple and solid state and offer no real replacement except for their larger and more expensive units

Tek Mar is a good control, but I have not installed one recently.

what are the settings on your heat timer? where is the indoor and outdoor sensors located etc etc etc.

  2. Our co-op has used Heat Timer Corp for our seven buildings for years, and we’re satisfied…

I agree with the previous poster… I would call and have Heat Timer check out your unit… perhaps it can be repaired.

  3. Look up Heat Timer Corp. in the Yellow Pages. They’re located in NYC. Their technicians can most likely fix your existing Heat Timer or sell you a new one. They’re not super cheap, but they know exactly what they’re doing.

I’ve used them several times and have always been happy with the results even though replacement parts can be expensive.

  4. Heat Timer is an old company credited with creating a device to turn a boiler on and off using an outdoor temperature sensor, a system temperature sensor and a timing device.
This device takes control of the system out of the hands of the building occupants.

More recently, a company called Tekmar released a device based on the same principles of “outdoor reset” but with far greater adaptive technology.
In other words, installed properly, the Tekmar device constantly learns about the way your particular system reacts to a changing environment and only runs your boiler exactly as much as it needs to based on the data it collects and some basic parameters set by the installer.

Both controls work well and Heat Timer has certainly made some upgrades to their products over the years, but the Tekmar line of boiler controllers is much smarter and less expensive to purchase.

If you’re heating the building with steam, you would use the Tekmar model # 269.
I’ll include a link in this post but their website is very much geared to trades people.

Notice they claim using their products will reduce fuel costs by 30%.
I’m not sure I believe that but 15% or 20% is certainly realistic.

My company has been using this line of products for the past 10 years or so with great success.
