Is there no such thing as a general contractor’s license in NYC?
DOB website says the following:
A – The Department of Buildings does not have any jurisdiction over general contractors. In fact, there is no General Contractors License in New York City. There is a Home Improvement Contractor License, administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Call 3-1-1 for more information regarding Home Improvement licenses.
Can anyone familiar with the topic explain to me how this works? What kind of oversight is there?
A Home Improvement License is required for contractors working on 1, 2, and 3 family homes.
General Contractors, however, are not required to have a license, if they are working for landlords, or in commercial buildings, and the like.
The Home Improvement License is mainly to protect individual home owners that have no experience with contractors and the construction process.
That is the GC license for NYC. It’s just a diff name. It is administered by Dept. of consumer affairs.

I was asking more in terms of GCs building or renovating multistory buildings. In Florida each major trade requires a license, as does the GC. The only difference is that superintendents do not require licenses.
There’s a Home Improvement Contractor License. Sub-contractors have licenses (plumber, electrician). Anyone can do drywall and light construction, but you want someone who has a registered business and is insured.
