The costs of such a complete remodel are, for us, prohibitive and, besides, we enjoy the feel and the detail in our current dining room; we just want to open up the adjoining tiny kitchen a bit more.
Has anyone done a pass-thru instead? ie put a “window” in the wall between the adjacent small room (ours is our kitchen) and the larger (dining room)… and extended the countertop?
Brownstoner, we’d love to see photos of that!

Watch the slideshow until about nearly halfway through, following photos of some people leaving a brownstone, and you’ll see the kitchen and dining room in question. The DR has red walls.
Gosh 3:18, that is exactly what I was thinking and you beat me to it. the counter was soapstone I think, fabulous looking. The whole renovation was top-drawer. I can see it as if I had just been there it made such an impression.

I’ve seen that done and it’s nice! Actually there was a house on the Lefferts Manor house tour last year that did just that in their kitchen. If someone has the link to the photos. Might be on the Lefferts Manor website, the 2006 tour photos.
