Does anyone know the step by step process to report an illegal occupancy for a one family that is being used as a three family, how long does is take for a response?

  1. I agree with the OP, 5:06 a cellar cannot be legal, no way possible (not to be confused with a basement) cellar’s are usually more than 50% below street level, so that’s strike one, also not to offend anyone but if this is a low income area chances are high that the top floor is also an illegal conversion, OP if this house is reducing the quality of life in your area you should say something, a closed mouth will not get fed!!!

  2. How do you know exactly how the house is split up? do you live there? DOB records can be inacurate.

If you suspect illegal activity or are bothered by noise, you first course of action is to call 311. They can also call the HPD/DOB to check out the housing status.

  3. OP here and to respond to 9:23 Illegal conversions reduce the quality of life by bringing more people to live in a neighborhood than it can support.

This unplanned growth can strain the capacity of the buses and subways and the sanitation and sewer systems. It can cause overcrowding in schools and create parking shortages, additionally this particular house is classified (by the dob)as a one family and currently has a family living in the cellar and on the top floor – they make substantial noise and there is some illegal activity. The slumlord also live on the parlor floor. What would you do??

Out of curiosity, this bothers you how?
