So, before I get completely flamed, I am thinking of moving to Dumbo with my wife.
99 Gold has some pretty good deals, but I wanted to know what everyone’s opinion of the projects near Dumbo is.
And is the park really starting to become a no go area at night ?

Comments

  1. To hear tell, the relationship of people in the projects to wandering yuppies is like lions in the veldt with zebras at the river.

Do you ever hear yourselves talk?

Believe it or not, people in the projects mostly have better things to do. Like working to get out of the projects. This is New York City. You have to have street smarts no matter where you go.

  2. I live on Gold between Front and Water and have lived there for over three years. I have never had problems and neither has my girlfriend. We both come home at odd hours, often alone. That being said I am always purposefully aware of my surroundings and people because there have been a couple of muggings over the past three years (what neighborhood hasn’t had this though?) and the streets can feel lonely late at night. Since the arrival of 99 gold and the Vista there has been a noticeable increase of foot traffic and people walking dogs during the evenings and nights. I dont walk over to the projects at night and not often during the day. There are a couple of seemingly shady people presumably from over there that ask for money or just creep you out but generally the begging takes place in DUMBO proper and is harmless. I agree with 2:11 it’s subjective because nothing terrible has happened to anyone (and its a close knit community so I think I would know) but it might feel more dangerous and unsafe to some because of the relative isolation and the projects. We had our hesitations too but now love the nabe and wouldnt move to a like building in another neighborhood. I am curious to know if anyone FROM the nabe has negative things to say. Anyone that dosent live there cant give sound advice. The same way I couldnt give advice about moving near the Ingersoll Houses in Ft Greene.

  3. DUMBO is totally unsafe. Packs of roving yuppies and artistes leisurely stroll the streets at night making crude taunts about your clothing and choice of stroller. Don’t even attempt to drive your SUV, it will be blocked in by flocks of Priuses whose drivers will demand to know your mileage. The park has all sorts of “those people” in it, at all times of day and night. And worse, there are projects.

Keyspan has a massive project tearing up the streets to add gas lines to the area (the yuppies must use a lot of gas). Walentas has a project to tear down much of the neighborhood around the gothic and much revered “chocolate factory” and build buildings for “those people” to move into.

You and your SUV would be much safer somewhere other than DUMBO.

  4. I live in Vinegar Hill as well and agree with the other posts. I don’t think VH is any less safe than DUMBO, and I feel perfectly safe walking in the neighborhood at night. HOWEVER, you will have to get used to walking through completely deserted streets, which, if you are used to living in an area that has a lot of foot traffic at night, can certainly FEEL very creepy and unsafe.

  5. Is it safe? It depends. I have lived in Vinegar Hill for a long time, and I have never had any problems. But, I am a man, and it can be different for a woman, esp. walking home late at night.
I have seen allot of people having sex in their cars in the neighborhood. I know of a few muggings that have taken place in the general area during the past few years.
More people are moving into the neighborhhod, and therefore more people are walking around.
At night, walking home alone, I would keep an eye on your back.
