I am looking for a reliable reference (affordable!) to build custom closets in my walk-in closet area. Also, depending on budget, I may also ask for custom bookshelves.

Thanks much.

  1. Try Rikki Gunz (phone# 917-217-9584). He is great, cost effective, good quality, friendly, straight shooter and has a shop on St. Johns just above 5th Avenue. He helped build my sons bed and our book shelves and we are very happy.

  2. The cost varies depending on whether you want lots of shelves or mostly hanging space. I just did 3 large closets in my new condo. Two were very wide closets (About 7 feet) of normal depth. One was similar width but deep enough to walk into.

In a closet that was mostly hanging, it cost around $500. A similar closet that had more shelves was around twice that. The big closet with many shelves to store dishes, household items, etc. cost around $2,500. So if you figure your closet is about equivalent to two of these closets–the hanging one and the mostly shelf one, I’m guessing you are looking at $3,000–more if you want lots of baskets, fancy shelves, drawers and the like. Look at their web site. You can get an idea of the kind of thing they do. The visit from the designer is free–our designer was Ellen, she was very helpful.

  3. Try the Closet Factory in Long Island City. They do top notch closet interiors. I’ve used them in two homes and always been pleased. They send a designer to your home to work with you.
