What do you think of this painting quote?
We just received an estimate for a paint job for our 2bed/2bath approx 900 sq. ft. apartment. It’s $8,250 which includes labor and materials for a 5-day job with a 5-6 person crew. The job would consist of opening cracks and blistering paint as necessary; priming; filling patches, spot-priming, and applying 2 coats of paint….

To skimcoat the main living/hall space we’d be looking at an additional $1,750, which could bring our grand total to $10K.
Does this sound about right to folks? High? Low?
Thank you in advance for your feedback!
I agree with most of the post here. The quote is just way too high. You should look for someone who doesn’t have the contractor attitude. I used this guy recently and I almost forgot he was a contractor. My wife and I was very pleased we keep talking about him. His name is Joseph and his number is 917-776-7260 and you can see his pictures @ http://www.photos.yahoo.com/delenyc
His passion shows through so much and the way he focus on quality of his work (not money)that you can’t help but share your experience with others.
I think thats really expensive, because my house is about the same size and i paid $8000 to get my 2bedroom & 2bathroom painted with my living room been skim coat also. The man who painted my house for such a reasonable price his name is Winston and you can contact at 718-926-5379 or 718-470-2886.
I love the poster who suggested you do it yourself. So helpful.
As others have pointed out, that quote is ridiculous.
If that was confusing, basically tiling the vestibule walls and floors was included in the $4000 priceand the materials as well. The hallway was repaired, primed and painted 2 coats from top to bottom and the garden apt as well. He was very professional, neat and was here early each day. i am talking 6:30 am for a 7 am start. He also hung a door and changed door locks……believe it or not for free. He was actually working in the neighborhood and when I asked the owner if he was reliable and did good work, he highly recommeneded him and let me in to see the work. I was impressed because he didnt make a mess and did good work. Unfortunately the owner of that house fixed it up and sold it so I cant even ask him for the number. I would get several quotes.I always ask to see contractors or persons work at a previous site so I can ask questions in regards to reliability and professionalism.

Oh my…..tooo much money…. I wish I could find the number to the painters I used. They did my hallway from top to bottom, in a 4 family brownstone, included repairing cracks, priming and 2 coats and ceiling, then did my entire garden apt including hallwalls, living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen and laundry room and closets for 4000 including materials aside from tiling vestibule wall and floor and repairing all cracks and holes from top to bottom which was included in the $4000 price.
Hi All — We have gotten more estimates, that was just the first one that came in. We’re not morons. 🙂 Someone we really liked when he came by quoted us at $2700 — there is no skim coating involved but he’ll do all the patch work and prep work. We have also called a few others and so we’re definitely shopping around. That high quote was the first one in and caused serious sticker shock. I was worried that it would be par for the course. I posted the quote on this forum to give me a reality check.
I appreciate the suggestions of doing the painting ourselves. I was certainly open to this but the timing just wasn’t going to work due to work travel , etc. It’s not an elitist thing it’s just a matter of being practical. My husband and I would not have had the time to dedicate to this project. Maybe even if we had the time, we would have decided that we would rather pay someone else to do it.
And it has crossed our mind that the money we won’t spend on a $10K paint job we can spend on some really nice pieces for our new home. Or we can save it for a kitchen renovation down the road…
Thank you everyone who posted.
Exactly, 12:40. They WANT to pay the prices in order to feel elite. That’s why we always see the responses like, “well I don’t want some bad, cheap job”. That attitude you only see in newbie homeowners. Anyone who has owned a home and been through it can tell you can pay up the wazoo for a contractor or painter and still have them do a bad job! Money does not equal quality, not all the time. Some things are certainly worth getting the pricier contractors. Like installing kitchens, bathroom, and finishing an entire basement. Big stuff. But painting? Get real. Me and a girlfriend can do one room a day. With high ceilings. We know, we did it in my own 900 foot apartment. And it looked fabulous. It didn’t look like crap at all. For $8,000 you can add some valuable features to your apartment or condo that actually inrease the value (which mere paint won’t do). Like splurge on some amazing light fixtures and a stunning chandelier. People overlook the importance of fabulous light fixtures. Also change all your doorknobs to some really nice quality ones.
