Has anyone installed Ikea kitchens? What do you think?

  1. 6 yr old Ikea kitchen and in great shape. If you like a clean modern look there’s no reason to pay twice as much for custom cabinets. Harware is top notch and easily adjustable. Glass fronts look good.

When you put cabs together, consider using glue in addition to mech. fasteners. They will be much stronger.

  2. We have an 8-year old IKEA kitchen in our rental apt. We lived there for a year and thought it worked great and our tenants (2 sets) have loved it. Almost no visible wear and tear. Like others posting here, our GC installed it and I think that made all the difference.

  3. So after assembling the ikea kitchen cabinets who else wanted to kill that stupid swedish freak in the instruction manual? LOL LOL. I would personally pay extra for a manual written with words vs. swedish man heiroglyphics. Anyway its been three years and the cabinets have held up well. But i will say that they were annoying to assemble and install (some of the istructions were plain wrong) and DON’T buy the swedish faucets since they are meant to be used with european (hence metric) plumbing. I don’t know why ikea doesn’t put a disclaimer about that. Also make sure everything you order is in stock. When i went to order the cabinets some items were not in stock. They assured me that these items were part of their most popular line and would be arriving in a few days. Well i waited for about 3 months and after that i ended up calling every ikea on the east coast seperately to try to find my missing items. Eventually i did but it was definitely a hassle. Finally be prepared to spend an entire day ordering your kitchen. When i went it took about 6 or 7 hours to order the items and then get said items out of the warehouse (and this was a weekday forget a weekend). That said good luck 🙂

  4. I installed a ikea kitchen. I only have cabinets along one wall though. My apt slopes but the ikea system makes it easy to level. It is definatly not fun putiing everything together, Use glue, they don’t tell you that. check out ikeafans.com for when you get stuck.

  5. We rehauled our crappy old kitchen and got ikea cabinets–also installed by an ikea certified installer (www.traemand.com) Love the kitchen. It looks terrific and saved $ on cabs so we could get high end countertops , appliances etc. For good info checkout this helpful site http://www.ikeafans.com. A designer on the site actually designed my kitchen for me–for free!

  6. Planning on installing yourself, or hiring it out?

I’m asking because we have ikea cabinets and are very happy witjh them but had a contractor install them for us. Our house is old and crazy and there’s not a plum wall in sight.

but if your kitchen is geometrically shipshape, I think you could easily put thewm together and install yourself. But if there’s any tricky business your sanity is best kept intact by farming it out.

  7. We used some of their free-standing Varde range. My husband is relatively handy and was able to put together a piece a day without losing his mind. They look great, drawers are smooth and nice, we love them. We also used Ikea’s double farmhouse sink, and had to buy the cupboard that goes with it but doesn’t technically match. It looks fine to us, used birch doors to match the varde stuff. This was put in by our contractor who stressed how heavy the sink is and how much support it needs. So far I’m very impressed… it’s been 5 months.
