How to close out open construction permit?
Earlier this year, our architect filed a permit for our modest renovation. When the job was complete, inspection was supposed to be done “self-cert.” The architect has long since disappeared, and now that the job is nearing completion, I’m wondering how do we close out the job with NYC and the appropriate agencies?

From what I know even if you hire another architect the previous one has to sign a paperwork stating that it is giving the job to somebody else.
Certainly ask the expediter about it. But for sure you can not just open another job with the same
scope of work without this one being resolved.
Try the disappearing architect again, write an official letter and mail it by certified mail to them stating that you need a final sign off. You
can take them to the small claim court or report them to AIA.
Just hire another architect. It’s expensive but you need to do this if you ever want to resell without hassle. If you know an expediter, call them and ask them to recommend an architect who will do this.
The architect was paid. She just removed herself from the project, and had been rather arrognt, defensive and nasty for a while, when called on the many mistakes she’d made on the job.
Did he/she disappear or you do not want to talk to
him/her for personal reasons? This does not sound K
kosher. It will cost you double for some other architect to take over the job. Many will not even talk about it or will not want to do it.
At what point of construction process did your architect disappear? Let me be frank, since a lot of people complain about their architects – did he/she get paid?
If you have an expediter, they’ll tell you how. I don’t know of any other way, without refiling the work with a new architect or just calling in the DoB inspector to sign off.
Is there any way to do it without the involvement of the architect?
This one disappeared, and I don’t really want to be in contact any more.
You need the architect. How could this person have just disappeared? You don’t have any contact information for them? You may have to just get a DoB inspector to come by and inspect it. You’ll have to talk to the expediter to figure out how to do that. You might need to refile some paperwork with a new architect.
