I want to put up a 6feet chain link fence at my front yard to minimize my wild neighbors’ mess in my property, and I am wondering if I need a permit to do it. Again is 6ft allowed in the front yard.
Thanks.

  1. I did metal fencing, black. (not iron, but the kind that is no maintenance) on the front. It is a corner house. One stretch of the fencing on the side is 4′ chain link. Since it was right next to privacy hedges and in good shape, we used the original and painted it black. On the back side fence and rear fence, we did new chain link. It is 6′ with privacy slates. It is a black. We went with the 6′ because in our neighborhood, people have climbed over the old short fencce to get into the back yard. The house has also been grafittied ( of course, now the fence has been) It is a brick row house, not historical. The colored chain link are not bad looking. However 6′ will seem higher than it is. We affectionatly call the back yard the cage match area!

  2. Please rethink putting up a chain link fence, it is so ugly and will not improve the ‘curb appeal’ of your house -even if you arent thinking of selling it.

Yes you can put up a fence(ensuring of course you are not in a controlled neighborhood(committee, historic approvals). Also you may want to cosider the asthetic appeal of such a fence and also what it says about you to the rest of your neighbors..

  4. Awww, it warms my heart that you guys have been so nice to this person who is just asking a simple question.

Yes, you can legally put up a 6 foot fence. No, you do not need to file if you’re doing it yourself.
