We have original metal door frames in our 1930s co-op apartment that have a very nice profile, but are loaded with layers of paint. Does anyone have a recommendation for a company that could come to our home and strip these down to the bare metal? I’m not sure if I’d like to repaint them or just lacquer them. The metal finish could be very cool. I see many posts for wood stripping on this site, but noone ever mentions metal moldings. Thank you all.

  1. Any firm that can do wood stripping can do metal stripping–it’s actually easier because the metal can take a beating, like another poster said. The same chemicals that are used on wood can be used on metal.

  2. Good luck…it will be expensive, but the good news is you can DIY. Since the doors and frames are metal, you can whale on them without gouging, scratching etc. I used Peel-a-Way then methyl chloride to get the last bits off. Lots of people leave them bare…looks a bit dark for my taste. We painted them with oil based primer/top coat and they look great.
