Dear Brownstoners,
After spending more time than I care to admit dithering and worrying about my new front doors (Poplar – will they warp? rot? entrysets, blah blah), my contractor is going to install them next week. Because they are poplar and solid plank construction (not the more stable stave construction,) I want to make sure that I do everything I can to prep and paint them to protect against moisture, warp, fungus, mold, rot and every other damn thing.
Can you kindly advise me on the best low lustre black paint for them? And also what kind of primer? I usually buy Benjamin Moore everything. But maybe there is something better. I need to start worrying about something else. This is getting old already. Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you as always.
Thanks NeoGrec and 1:21. I drove out to the only Brooklyn distributor of fine paints of Europe in Sheepshead Bay and they helped me a lot. The staff is very knowledgeable and explained why I should pay double what Benjamin Moore wants. It seems that it lasts much longer. We’ll see. And thank you for pointing out that we can’t forget the bottom. I got the paint, the primer and a beautiful brush and we’re ready to go. Thanks.
I second the Fine Paints of Europe recommendation. Also, as obvious as this sounds, you gotta gotta gotta paint the underneath of the door with several coats, ie. the narrow surface that touches the floor. That’s where the water penetration starts.
