I’m curious if anyone has experience using Home Depot as a contractor. I’m looking to have an apartment painted, have a built-in closet designed/installed and have a built-in bookshelf/media station designed/installed. It seems to me that using HD would take some of the reputational issues out of the equation (which is generally a major concern), but I haven’t seen much written about them or heard of anyone’s experience with them. Are there any thoughts on this?

  1. For the love of God, don’t do it! HD is a succubus from the bowels of the earth, out to suck you dry. Do some additional research…something better will turn up. Also, look under services on Craig’s List. You should be able to find some good, legitimate people who actually take pride in their work and don’t cost an arm and a leg. Best of luck!

  2. I’ve posted here before about our nightmarish experiences with Home Depot Services, as have several others. Check the archives, or I can you time by summing up: avoid at all costs!

Also search the web. This is a national problem. HD has a TERRIBLE reputation for services. I think there are even a couple of class-action lawsuits against them.

  3. thanks for the feedback. seems pretty unanimous. Looks like I’m better off doing some good research on reputable contractors or carpenters/painters individually. I do appreciate the insight!

  4. I think HD in the city is different from the ‘burbs. Out here, my brother used HD to install new floors and kitchen cabinets/appliances and didn’t have a single complaint. But my experience with HD in Queens (and this was just buying special-order stuff) was beyond horrendous. The difference is probably due to the skill levels of workers who’ll sign up to work through HD.

  5. Pay a visit to the store (over by 3rd Ave.) and take a look around. It’s what I’d imagine a post apocolipic hardware store would be.

I’m only there if I’m desperate.
I couldn’t even imagine what you’d get if they supplied you with a ‘contractor’. Maybe the Humongus from Road Warrior?

  6. I am with 5:40. In fact shooting yourself may be less painful than dealing with Home Depot. Please don’t use them. If you have a while I can share with you some of my own personal Home Depot horror stories and if I can save somebody the agony of dealing with them other than buying light bulbs or something off the shelf, I will. Home Depot could give a shit about their reputation, trust me. Do a search on home depot on this site and your eyes will cross. Don’t do it.

  7. I haven’t used a home depot contractor, but…

…it sounds like going to Petsmart and expecting to get decent dog training. Why would any good, with-it contractor who can get their own business sign up with Home Depot?

  8. I have two guys ,they are brothers and they work for a very good company in the city. And on the weekend they do work on their own, people like me who can’t afford a major reno and we do the work one step at a time. The quality is top notch and the price is fare, what else you need. One of them is a painter and the other is a carpenter.
