Brownstone Door
We have double doors to our brownstone that are approximately 14 feet tall and the one side that is used for entry purposes is a little unstable. Does anyone know of a lock system that includes a rod that slips into a catch at the top of the door (kind of like a vertical police lock I think). I think this type of system would help stabilize the top end of the door. Failing that are there any idea for stabilizing doors of this height?

  1. My house with double doors has simple slide locks on the top and bottom of doors. They are on the non-opening side only, but you’d be surprised how much they support the opening door and keep everything aligned properly.

  2. Wow — 14′ doors. I think you want to look into
“door bolts”. There are several varieties:
some are surface mounted on the door and either
have a hand mechnism or one on a chain. Others
are mounted on the edge of the door (requires
routing out the edge to accommodate the bolt).
These come in various sizes but not sure I’ve
seen any 7″ long (as you would require since
the bolt could start at 7′ from the floor and then
it has to go to the top of the door”.
