I own a wood frame house in Ft. Greene and posted earlier about redoing the cement stoop. Now I’m wondering if I should not be doing cement at all and go back to a wood stoop? Does anyone know the pros and cons of wood v cement? Or have a wooden house where you’ve done a similar job?

  1. Wood just looks better especially on a wood frame house. May I suggest that you investigate the water/weather proof materials they have now that replicate wood.

  2. Agree with 5.51 that wood can be a nightmare.Cement can look a bit bland, but a lot of people these days use limestone or bluestone on the treads, which can look quite attractive and is long lasting and easy to maintain.

  3. Wood stoops are a nightmare. Wood rots and it’s very difficult to stop water from leaking between the planks.

I would definitely recommend keeping the cement. It’ll last much longer, not require frequent painting, and is much more water retardant.

  4. Maybe the cement stoop will hold up better in a cold weather climate, where one has to scrape off ice and snow from stairs, and scatter salt, etc.
