I have received an estimate for painting the hallways of my 4 story brownstone of $8500. (actually it will involve painting the hallways on 3 floors plus a stairwell to the ground level.) The painter has an established business with a crew and seems very qualified. He says the job will take 2 weeks and that I will be very satisfied. However, I’m not sure if the price is reasonable. In addtion to painting the walls, the job will involve doing some repairs of cracks, applying an oil based primer, painting trim (baseboards, facing doors and moldings), and using some special ladder(s) to reach inside a high skylight to do some plaster repair and paint.
Any comments on the price?
We hired Sarah Arambarry to paint our apt and were very pleased with the results. Her prices seemed fair and her attention to detail was just what you’d want for your own home. She works alone so you won’t get a rush job and she may also be a bit hard to schedule. We found her through this page on PSP. You may want to ask her for a bid. Her # from the link: (718) 288-4772

DIY:
The ‘special ladder’ can be made by taking a regular ladder, leaning it against the back of the stairs, putting boards across from the stairs to the ladder, and standing on that (possibly with another ladder.
Skim coating is expensive, but not _THAT_ expensive. The guys who do it cost $20/hr or (much) less + materials; painting is pretty easy and those guys can be had for less than $15/hr.
You may not need full skim coating; crack repair is prety easy as well.
Finally, you can do the painting yourself in a weekend — job won’t be as nice , but for the upper hallway/staircase, who cares?
I did this in my parents’ house in middle school with zero training and no mishaps.
that price sounds ridiculous. pick a laborer up at 65th and 15th ave and buy your own materials. i nearly gut reno’ed an apt for 8500 with laborers. of course the work won’t be top notch, but any semi-experienced worker knows how to compound and paint walls.
SKIM COATING .. IS VERY EXPENSIVE .. GET MORE ESTIMATES AND ASK TO SEE PICTURES OF PREVIOUS JOBS SIMILAR TO YOURS

You should get 3 estimates. Three. And call references. Try to actually see some of their preious work. I made the mistake of not doing this and now have walls that look like crapand a wallet that is many thousands of dollars lighter. It’s a big enough job to spend some time doing your homework. You will also get a sense for the range of price by looking at the 3 bids.
