Co-op board approval for cabinets?
Do you typically need board approval in a coop building to replace kitchen cabinets and the major appliances? Not moving any gas/plumbing/electric. Not retiling, etc. What if you wanted to do it yourself and not hire a GC (ikea cabinets, have appliance center do the installation)? many thanks for any insight… considering placing a bid…

many thanks for any insight… considering placing a bid on an apt not sure what typical coop board is like.
It depends on the building. Smaller buildings probably won’t care, especially if there’s no changes to plumbing and electrical. But it’s the kind of thing I’d give a polite heads-up to my neighbors on regardless.
Your co-op documents will most likely clearly outline this. You should read those first.
But I would say that at the very minimum you will probably need to write a letter to them stating your intended Scope of Work and they will then let you know what further requirements there may be (insurance, licensed installers, permits). Be as simple as possible with the Scope of Work (i.e. remove and replace cabinets and appliances in kitchen in existing locations. paint.)
My co-op does not allow us to do any work ourselves. Everything has to be insured for $1M, well, except minor repairs and painting, though many people bend the rules a bit.
I would venture to say that they will probably allow you to do the work yourself, except they may require you to have a plumber install the sinks and d/w, because they will probably require you to install new shut-off valves.
Talk to your co-op board or the managing agent. Every co-op has different rules.
Hard to say yes or no – I would generally say yes – you need permission. You also may be required to put a security deposit down to cover any possible damage to common areas. there will certainly be rules on the times of day and days of week when you can work, so if you are planning DIY don’t count on being able to do the work 9-midnight when you get home.
You should have a terms of condition or regulation handbook from the co-op on this?
