the only entrance to my garden is through the basement, so I want to replace the parlour floor windows with french doors (or some kind of doors) and put a deck with stairs to the garden. since I’m on a medium-tight budget, I don’t want to go custom. Can somebody recommend who to go to for qaulity prefabricated doors. Should I look at Marvin, or are other companies better (quality, value?) Also, since I’ll have to open up the brick for the door, it’s going to be a bit of a project. does anybody have a sense of how much something like this might cost? (i.e. the door, the opening of the brick, the installation, etc.). Thanks very much for your thoughts.

  1. We went with Elegant Entries who replaced the window with a metal/glass door in place for 2100. Well insulated, door fits well and closes solidly. Had a carpenter build one step inside/out since the sill was only 18″ above floor (500).

If I had to do it over, I’d open up the sill to make it level with floor, which I got a quote of 1,500, and would’ve been better. I guess in that case the door would’ve needed a transom, adding to the price, maybe.

Quote on doors ranged from 1800-6000 (“custom” fancy wood)!
