I am thinking about extending the extension on my brownstone. Currently it takes up about 1/3 of the width of my 20′ home and juts out about 5′ into the garden, but I’d like to have it extend to the full width of the building without making it stick out more into the garden. I would do the work during the day so as not to disturb the neighbors and would only do minor removal of the bricks on one side of the extension so as to create a more open inside space. I’d also be adding a large glass door and probably another window to the side facing the garden.

Has anyone done this? Do I need a permit or to involve the DOB in some way? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. All you need is a case of cold beer and a crowbar.

Who the hell needs permits and architects? Only wimps do things legally.

Seriously, are you drunk? Of course the only legal way to do it is through an architect. You must be a pretty smart guy to save up and buy a house. Why are you asking such dumb question?

Sorry to be snide, but you should know better.

  2. My next door neighbors are doing the same thing except they are also doing a fair amount of work inside the house as well. They hired an architect and filed everything with the DOB and landmarks. I think your first step would be to bring in an architect as well. Pay no attention to the people above as they seem to not really have nothing better to do than offer useless advice.

  3. Of course you need a permit. You also need an architect, an expediter and possibly a structural engineer. Or Would you like your house to fall down or get fined?
