Broken Verizon Circuit Box in Backyard
There is a broken Verizon circuit box on a service pole located in our backyard – it’s broken open with wires spilling out and the service wires leading to several of the neighboring houses have dropped as low as 3′ off the ground and are resting on the branches of 2 trees in my backyard….

I have called Verizon 4 times and over a month and 3 missed appointments later, they still have yet to do anything about their circuit box.
What recourse do I have to get them to fix it? The pole and box are located on my property.
We have children in the house, so I’m worried about the safety issues of low wires and also of wires resting on branches which could fall on someone.
I have a skype phone so it doesn’t service my house at all. I’m so annoyed that I fantasize about taking a sledgehammer to the box and then not letting Verizon in when the whole block complains about their loss of service.
Really though, what can I do to make them remedy the situation?
Just refuse access to the pole for any worker in the future. when a manager comes out you demand the pole be removed asap. no access will be granted unless!! it’ll work
Hi OP here.
I’m not sure what, if anything, is possible as far as getting rid of the pole (I would LOVE to get rid of the thing. I keep eyeing the chainsaws at the hardware store with extreme interest.)
THANKS for the suggestions. I called 311 and they connected me with the Public Utilities Commission. I will keep this thread updated w/ my progress for the benefit of the other people with similar problems.
Also, if you guys find any information regarding Verizon’s right (or lack thereof) to have their pole on my property, let me know with a post on the forum.
I have the same situation. Verizon comes out to make repairs but never really takes care of the problem…the pole is falling over. This pole also serves Time Warner Cable. Verizon owns the poles and leases them to T.W. We had a Verizon Supervisor/Engineer come out and tell us that the whole block is a problem and they will fix our pole when they do the rest…sometime in the unspecified future. That was almost a year ago. We get our phone service through T.W. so we don’t have any personal account to complain about. I am interested in getting rid of the pole. The supervisor told me they would move it to the backyard of one of the apartment buildings where no one cares.
How about that guy on one of the local NYC News networks…Hlep Me Howard?
Sounds like you’ve given them enough rope to hang themselves. The pen is mightier than the sword so stop calling and start writing. Fax (don’t mail) your letter to Ivan G. Seidenberg Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. It takes a little more effort but the last thing corporations want is to have complaints in writing. Who know where that piece of paper may end up …
See if anything in their Code of Conduct conflicts with your experience with them and point that out. In all likelihood they’ll be out to fix it after that. Corporations don’t want negative publicity brought about as a result of their negligence.
We have a similar pole/box/wires at the back of our yard. What legal right does verizon have to keep the pole there? Is there an easement & who granted it? Should we be paid for use of our space. We want to get rid of the thing…

Would 311 help at all???
Call up the New York state public service commission (google it and you can find all the info on their site) and file a complaint. I work in the telephone industry and verizon can get fined if they have too many complaints open with the PSC so they do listen to them! Good luck.
