There is a broken Verizon circuit box on a service pole located in our backyard – it’s broken open with wires spilling out and the service wires leading to several of the neighboring houses have dropped as low as 3′ off the ground and are resting on the branches of 2 trees in my backyard.
I have called Verizon 4 times and over a month and 3 missed appointments later, they still have yet to do anything about their circuit box.
What recourse do I have to get them to fix it? The pole and box are located on my property.
We have children in the house, so I’m worried about the safety issues of low wires and also of wires resting on branches which could fall on someone.
I have a skype phone so it doesn’t service my house at all. I’m so annoyed that I fantasize about taking a sledgehammer to the box and then not letting Verizon in when the whole block complains about their loss of service.
Really though, what can I do to make them remedy the situation?
When Brooklyn gets FIOS all those wires will be obsolete.
Also, the box in question seems to be a old, disused circuit box.
I have a feeling the box itself is not live, but I worry that the wires could come in contact with other utility lines on the same pole if a child were to pull on the drooping cable, or if we have another good, strong wind-day like last week.
Hi-
The branches won’t rip down the lines… the lines are resting on top of the branches.
Thanks for the warning. I’m taking pictures of it just in case Verizon tries to claim the opposite though.
Do I have any rights, considering it’s located on MY property?
I forget the exact name, but make a complaint with the NY State Public Utilities Commission. This has always brought results for me in the past.
If its working they’re NOT going to fix it. They adhere to the motto, “If ain’t broke, why fix it”.
Here’s what you need to worry about. Let’s say one of those branches breaks and rips down one of the lines. You’ll be suprised to find that Verizon will try to bill your insurance company for the damage. Be forewarned.
OK – I said it’s a FANTASY, not reality.
Really though, I’m at the end of my rope about this.
Verizon knows they don’t stand to lose a customer since I don’t use their service.
What can I do (short of incurring legal fees) to get them to fix their stupid box? From the looks of it, the wires are so spilled out and jumbled, it probably isn’t even in service any more. It still is a hazard however since it’s attached to other wires which may pose a danger.
Sue for what? Water in an exposed box?
That would be great if you want to knock out all of the phones for your neighbors. They will definitely not sue you when they cannot call an ambulance or the police.
Take a water hose and drench the box in water. This will cause the lines to short(it’s all low voltage, so dont worry).
They will be out pretty quickly to fix it.
