Steer Clear of A&K Tile Stuido

After paying a $1000 deposit to A&K Tile to hold a stone for a countertop, I found their estimate to be too high for my wallet. When I told them I had to cancel the job and asked for a refund of my deposit, Gerry (Gerrard Owens) said “no problem.” No work had been done, other than providing an estimate. Well, 30 days and counting and it’s a problem — no refund. Check’s been “in the mail” at least three times so far. I made the mistake of paying by check from my line of credit. Don’t you do the same — stick to the credit card so you can dispute the charge. These people are overpriced and unscrupulous. Small Claims Court, Dept of Consumer Affairs, here I come.
Further to my comment about the shower door, this guy continued to assure us that he would remedy the problem and never did. In small claims court he mis-represented the case entirely and I was dumbstruck by his ability to prevaricate without conscience.
I ordered a shower door from this guy and he delivered the wrong door and would not take it back. I had to take him to small claims court for recovery. He is very unethical and I would warn people away from him.
I had nothing but a horrible experience with A&K. We bought tiles and our kitchen cabinets from them, and they insulted us, berated us, insulted our incredible contractor, ordered the wrong cabinets, blamed us for their errors. I could go on and on. They are the absolute worst I’ve dealt with ever, and I’ve renovated 5 houses over the last 10 years!

From OP — lo and behold! check has arrived in today’s mail — postmark was 2/14. Guess it was a Valentine’s day present.
Once it clears, I’ll breathe a sigh of relief. Are they absolved of maliciousness — probably. But this kind of “quirk” still means I know better than to deal with them.
Anyhow, all’s well that ends well.
eff that. if someone asks me for a deposit just to give an estimate, i’m out of there. sorry, there are simply too many choices out there for stone countertops to hand over $1000 just for an estimate.
I must say that this is one of the more interesting exchanges on this forum because it gives 2 different views of the same company. I don’t think people should refrain from giving negative experiences here just because it may be viewed as an effort to malign. If others feel differently, I hope they chime in like Anon 10:46 did.
10.46, how is it that OP is intending to harm them by warning others that s/he had a bad experience? From what OP says, s/he’s been more than patient. I don’t see what the BFD is to put a refund check in the mail, unless you have no intention of doing so in the first place. Maybe we should just ban any forum feedback on vendors altogether, or allow it only as long as it’s positive.
And how is it that they can’t defend themselves? What, they don’t have a computer and two hands to type? I’d love to hear their response to OP and their excuse for not refunding this person’s cash in a timely fashion. If it were me, these clowns would’ve already found themselves in court.
To February 15, 2007 4:28 PM — I gave them the deposit before they gave me the estimate. They said it was needed so that the stone I chose would be held for me.
To February 15, 2007 10:46 PM — I have been working very hard to resolve with them. Conversations have been cordial and pleasant, in person and on the phone — but no money is appearing. The question becomes — how long do we play this game? Quirky is one thing — honesty is another. I don’t want damages, I just want my cash. I don’t know how many people on this forum can afford to drop $1000 without batting an eyelash; I’m not one of them.
I will be glad to post after the results of small claims court, but since that will take at least another month, I wanted to give people a “heads up” in the meantime.
