My husband and I are considering buying a house on Putnam Ave and Marcus Garvey. But are concerned on the areas safety since there’s a shelter across on Marcus Garvey. It seemed relatively quiet when we were there, but I think everyone tends to stay indoors during cold weather. Any idea on how safe that block is? What’s the area like during the summer?

  1. It’s a personal choice where you live and what risks you take, but if someone offered a house in PS at Bed Stuy prices, you would be stuuuuuuu-pid not to buy it.

If you don’t want to live there, just rent it out (to big burly kickboxing guys and cops, if your conscience won’t let you rent it to a single woman living alone).

    Ha.

  2. Mame you have every right to be scared sorry for upsetting you. But honestly you can be red, black, and green if someone offered you a 3 million dollar home in parkslope at bed stuy prices you might sing a diffrent tune.

  3. 12:09 who the hell are you to ask me then answer for me.I don’t care where it is I would be leery to live near a shelter…No one is getting into a Bed-Stuy, park-slope debate thats your issue. I am quite fine where I live in KENSINGTON..I AM BLACK AND have lived in Bed-Stuy, prospect Heights/Crown Heights..etc,..Can a woman be scared of getting sexually assualted if you don’t mind.

  5. 9:58 would live near the shelter on 8th ave in park slope Or would you buy a brownstone on 8th ave for 700K if it was offered? I think you would the homes in the surrounding area of the shelter in Bed Stuy are just as beautiful as the homes in Park Slope. There are lots muggings happen every night on 8th ave.

The real issue is NYPD needs more time. The area is in fact changing I own in PS and Bed Stuy and I remember 5th ave in the early 90’s. My neighbors tell me horror stories about 7th ave in the 70’s.

Your 30 yr MTG commitment is also a commitment to the neighborhood. It will be ok

  6. Depends on the nature of the shelter and how it’s run. There was (and still is) a drop in shelter on 77th st on the UES across the street from my building and didn’t know it until 3-4 months after I moved in. I lived there 10 years, never had a problem personally and never heard of a problem on the street from it.

  7. There is no way I would live near a shelter…as a woman there are usually a high number of sex offenders living there..I mean everyone needs a place to live and some are down on their luck; but if you ever look up sex offender registries a lot are living at shelters. If you think I am kidding go to criminal check.com if the address is 357 Marcus Garvey for the shelter there is a profusion of sex offenders..

  8. 7:09, I always get in trouble when I answer these questions but for what it’s worth, I think you are safe enough. It can be somewhat disconcerting to see a few guys hanging out on the corner, but they don’t bother anyone, and the police presence at that shelter is constant. I live a block and a half away, and pass there often, and have always seen a patrol car and/or a patrol van parked out front. From what I’ve seen, the hanging out is only in the morning, when they leave the shelter. I’ve heard that the place is run very efficiently and well, and they don’t tolerate a lot of crap.

I would factor it into a decision to buy/rent there, your comfort level and feelings of safety, after all, are what really count, but I would not let the presence of the shelter be my prime reason to not live there.

    Just my 2 cents.
