Gang:
I needed a painter to salvage a painting project gone awry in my Prospect Lefferts Gardens brownstone… I found James Dockett’s name here on Brownstoner. He was FANTASTIC, I cannot speak highly enough of his work. Meticulous, perfectionist, terrific work. He is just great. His name’s James Dockett and his number is 347-200-6022.

  1. Warning: James Dockett disappeared with thousands of dollars of our money, and never did the painting he was supposed to do.

Last summer, we read positive reviews of James on the Brownstoner forum, so we called him. He came to our brownstone, and gave us a quote to paint it. We hired him, paid him a deposit of thousands of dollars to get started right away, and a few days later when he was supposed to start, he never showed up. He didn’t return our phone calls, and weeks later his phone was disconnected.

We continued to call him for a few months (his phone was eventually was reconnected) to get our money, and finally he called us back. He told us he would pay us back, explaining he got himself into a problem, and eventually paid us half of the money. But he still owes us thousands of dollars.

We certainly would not recommend that anyone use him.

  2. James is working on our place right now and, yeah, he’s great. He’s got excellent design sense, too. Everyone should hire him and pay him bags of money (uh, but wait until he finishes our
    house…)
