We just moved into a lovely Brownstone in Boerum Hill and have discovered that our wood floors are VERY susceptible to scratching–dare I say, gouging. The floors are beautiful wide plank (don’t know what kind of wood) and were very recently refinished but I fear that they were not sealed properly. It’s almost as though the finish is “soft” and is so sensitive to scratching. Any suggestions? Is there a seal that would give the floor a proper “harder” finish? Is that something you can do yourself or can you suggest someone? Thanks for the help.
Yes, we had same experience in an old house. This subflooring was in the bedrooms so it was OK as people didn’t walk on it that much, but in a high traffic area, you have a problem. Can you cover it with rugs?

the beautiful wide planks are probably pine subflooring. (hard to tell without a photo). If that is true, they were never meant to be walked upon, and weere covered originally either by a more expensive and harder wood, or a floor covering such as linoleum or wall to wall carpet. I pulled up my subfloor, put down plywood, then put the subfloor back down. I had it sealed in three coats of oil based polyeurethene. The floors look very country but I haven’t noticed many scratches.
