Brownstone kitchen design
Just wondering how people have designed their garden level brownstone kitchens. In ours it appears that the original fireplace was tiled over and the stove was placed in front of it. Any suggestions?

That fireplace opening is the original placement of the stove when the house was built. That is where the chimney for the stove is. There should be a nice slab on the floor where the original cast iron stove was. You are positive there was a fireplace there? I think that was the spot for the stove. You should put your new stove there with a hood ventiing up the chimney (which will have to be relined) and you can frame out the wall next to the brick that protrudes and you can put all your new plumbing, gas and electric in this wall. Then you sheetrock it flush to the brick.

Because the stove is in front, you’re losing space. Most often I see the stove pushed inside the fireplace opening. That’s what I have. If I were going to do my kitchen over I would remove the whole fireplace. By removing it, you will have a flat wall to hang your cabinets. A much better use of space. I’m all for saving original deail if it has some beauty or function. But these old fireplaces don’t have any purpose anymore.
