We just had red oak wood floors installed in our kitchen this morning. Earlier this evening, we noticed water seeping up between the joints. Under the sink, we discovered that there was a slow leak from the dishwasher connection that had been leaking all day. We have fans on the floor, and have been blotting with towels. The floor people return in 2 days to sand. Will we need to replace the wood that has been affected by the water before they sand, or should we just let it dry out? Help!

  1. Turn up the heat and get in a dehumidifier. Then wait a couple of months to see if the floors go down to where they should be and then bring in the floor guys to finish it all up for you.

  2. Definitely do not sand them until you’re sure they’re dry. You’re in luck though because the winter climate is great for drying out wood. You could speed the process along by renting a professional fan & dehumidifier.

  3. We had a similar issue. You are probably better off not sanding the floors and letting them fully dry out. They may “cup” for even a couple of months, but odds are they will return to their flat shape. If you sand them now, they will not look good once they fully dry. Good luck.
