Anybody have experience with Munchkin boilers for heating their homes?

  1. All mod/cons have the same problem in NYC. AS long as you’re clear of building openings, you can use the boiler.
As for “average plumbers”? You just need one that reads installation manuals.

One other thing: Consider installing the Munchkin on the top floor of your building and venting it vertically through the roof not exceeding 30 linear feet of exhaust piping (elbows count as five feet of straight pipe due to the restriction they create). Line the boiler room floor with waterproofing material and add a floor drain.

    Good luck.

  2. OP here. Thanks Master Plvmber. That is discouraging. One would think the city would do more to encourage efficient gas use.
However, what if they terminate vertically then, say through the roof of a rear extension away from a door / window?
Which mod/cons get installed around here (in Brooklyn)? And is the installation something that an average plumber is able to do properly?

  3. I haven’t installed that particular boiler yet but I know after working out some bugs, they are growing in popularity. The Munchkin is a modulating and condensing boiler which vents out a side wall. To have one installed within NY City limits, plans drawn by a Professional Engineer must be filed with NYC Department of Buildings showing, among other things, that the vent terminates a safe distance from a door or window. I believe that “safe distance” is 5 feet but I would confirm that. It might be 10 feet.
This is why we don’t see many mod/con boilers around here. They are difficult to retrofit.
