We have an apartment in a 100 year building. The (small) kitchen was renovated by the prior owner, who put in black and white hexagonal floor tiles. They look great but they are CONSTANTLY cracking and breaking up. We would like to replace them with something that is hardier. The adjoining floor surfaces are the original hardwood floors with decorative veneers. Thanks in advance for any suggestions of materials, suppliers etc.

  1. When I referred to “give” I was talking about what this person may put down over the subfloor. In other words instead of tearing up the subfloor in order to install tiles, install something softer that will give when you walk and not crack — like cork, or another less brittle material.

  2. Any tile floor is only as good as what is beneath it. Sounds to me that the cracking is caused by movement of the subfloor. That’s what needs beefing up.
