Bay Ridge vs Kensington
In the spirit of the previous post regarding buying in kensington, I am interested to find out what people think of buying in kensington vs bay ridge. I find the two neighborhoods to be similarly priced but not sure which is a better buy? What do you guys think?

I LOVE KENSINGTON! Prospect park is a short walk, there are tons of places to order from if you want take out, and yes park slope is a short distance away if you want to go out for breakfast or dinner. It’s a GREAT neighborhood and more importantly it’s so close to the city. On the express bus it’s 20 minutes to mid-town. You cant go wrong.
I grew up in Brooklyn and don’t really
prefer one neighborhood over the other, but
I see that people keep mentioning the distance
to Park Slope. If you lived in Bay
Ridge, there would be no reason to go
to the Slope as Bay Ridge has everything you
need, including parks, restaurants, shopping and gorgeous scenery. Kensington is an easier commute to the city, but you may have to venture into other Bklyn neighborhoods for amenities.
Both are great areas IMO – safe, mostly good neighbors, “reasonable” prices, etc.
I think Kensingtons proximity to Prospect Park, Park Slope, etc.. as well as its proximity to Manhattan and easier parking are its biggests pros. If you commute to Manhattan and/or have a car…its a winner.
On the other hand, Bay Ridge has better restaurants and stores. (its a much larger area than Kensington so Im only speaking about its prime blocks) It has a better inventory since its larger and there are some nice lime/brownstones to be had.
I think if you compare similar units and similar quality blocks, you’ll find Bay Ridge more expensive than Kensington.
Hope that helps!
What kind of a deal did you get on your 1 bdrm? I
am in the market for a 1 bedroom and would be
interested in knowing what would be considered
a really good deal in that area.
Thanks
I live in Kensington and love it..peace and quiet Ocean Parkway/Cortelyou. Maybe there are not a whole lot of amenities but I can always walk down to cortelyou or chruch ave, don’t forget deliveries. It’s nice living in a heavily residential area that is not overly commercialized..You may have to do a little walking to find amenities..But I have a nearby within 2 blocks supermarket/coner store/drug store/laundry/bar/cleaners..I love it there is ho hipness or pretentiousness here just comfortable basically safe living and I got a hell of a good deal on a 1 bedroom apartment.
I just moved to BayRidge..the commute to manhattan/ NYC isn’t bad at all. With the N going express now its only half hour. Better than some Park Slope locations with the F, or Lefferts, or probably Kensington too.
My best friend lives down in Bay Ridge (going on 8 yrs there now) and I live in Boerum Hill. Can’t say much about Kensington but I do know that Bay Ridge is terrific but the commute is long. If I were a stay at home mom I woudl live there but my husband & I both work in Manhattan and it’s just too far away. There are some great schools in Bay Ridge also. For what it’s worth, we just bought a solid Victorian in Ditmas Park for a great price so maybe add that nabe to your list. Good Luck!
The way i see it here is the difference. They are both quiet, safe, residential neighborhoods. Bay ridge seems to have more shopping (ie. shops other than dollar stores) and more restaurants and bars (though not a huge amount of either) but kensington is closer to manhattan and to park slope. I live in kensington and i wouldn’t want to live in bay ridge mostly b/c of its distance from manhattan.
I dont know Kensington, but we bought a brownstone in Bay Ridge in Oct 2005 and love it here. Bay Ridge has lots of grand limestones and brownstones with nice details, lots of established restaurants, dry cleaners, drug stores etc. The commute on the subway from Bay Ridge to mid town Manhattan is about 45 minutes door to door (I bet its not much shorter from Park Slope). Anyway, for the money I think Bay Ridge is the best thing going in Brooklyn!
