Yet another pine flooring question. I’m looking to replace our dining room floor. I believe what I have is wide plank pine in the living room, which I’d like to match. It’s old, perhaps original to the house (1870s era).

Some questions I’d love help with:

(1) What ‘s the best way to identify the floors we have? As I don’t want to take the floor up just yet, and I think photographs are a bit unreliable, I’d love a professional opinion.

(2) Can anyone recommend a local source for reclaimed wide plank pine flooring? I’d be open to salvage or a flooring source. I’d prefer not to go out of state if I can help it. (A number of people have posted good things about Summit Flooring. Does anyone have a contact number?)

(3) What should I budget psf to source and install?

(4) Does this kind of flooring require a specialist installer and refinisher?

  1. (1)If you realy want to know what kind of wood your floor is made of send a sample to the US Forestry Service and they will tell you definitively what it is (for free): http://www2.fpl.fs.fed.us/WoodID/idfact.html
    (2) Do you consider CT to be out of state? Go to woodwood.com. Klaus specalizes in old growth, reclaimed wood (the stuff brownstones are made of).
    (3) generaly rough sawn is sold by the board foot and if it is milled it will be sold by the linear foot. (about $10/bf for something decent)
