I have an old (very) scratched parquet floor in two rooms that I’d like to polish up. Does anyone know how difficult it is to diy? Or can anyone recommend a (low budget) service/company that specializes in this sort of thing?

  1. Just have a go yourself. i did mine this weekend.. I hired a drum sander and a corner sander and now it look lovely… just make sure you are very light when sanding….

  2. You can find a reliable flooring guy in the Brooklyn Papers back page home Improvment section; they cater to brownstone Brooklyn and actually i get their paper home delivered every Saturday morning for free; it just started popping up one week on my brownstone stoop and hasn’t stop since (thank god I love the paper; save me the trouble of having to find one) i think their website is linked on the front page of brownstoner.com just saw it recently otherwise their website should be Brooklynpapers.com (maybe w/out “s”) But check them out the guy whom did my flooring a few years ago i found there; he was great but has retired since.

    Good Luck!

  3. And let me add to that…don’t go with the least expensive “pro”. Some of those cheap-o guys can damage your floors. Get references. I’m a DIY person, but I still hire pros to do my floors.

  4. If you have no experience sanding foors don’t try doing it yourself! I’m experienced in all forms of renovation I see the marks of a DIY floor jobs all the time in peoples homes. The trouble is controlling the sander so you don’t get any divits. If you want a good, flat high quality job, call in the pros!
