Maybe you could go with a third option. Icestone. As far as I know, it is durable enought for floors and it’s green.
Im planing on ripping out my 2 year old entrance way granite b.c. its slippery…
right now its mostly covered with a rubber mat.
be carefull to choose the right material.
It was KFJ stone of Kent St. 718-596-4000. Near entrance to BQE on Kent St. You know, I am thinking now the black marble was 7 dollars and the cream might have been a little more than 5.50 but not much. To cut the tile was 1 dollar a cut (each time they cut the marble it was 1 dollar, so to make one 12 x 12 into 2 6 x 6s was 2 dollars.
Also the colors were absolute black and the cream I don’t know. I looked around a while to find something that was nice and the original one I picked turned out they didn’t have so howed me a substitute, which I agreed to. I never knew the name of the color – also I say it was cream, but it was moving toward a goldish color.
If you get the marble, you need to make sure you seal it, just like countertops, to prevent staining. It looks so nice; I am very pleased with the way it turned out.
donatella – do you remember the names of the
2 marbles & where did you purchase?
I just tiled a hallway with cream colored marble tiles (5.50 per tile). For a little entrance way, I used the same cream tiles and black marble and had them cut the tiles and bevel the edges into 6 x 6 squares. I made a diagonal pattern, alternating black and cream. It is beautiful. Everybody wanted to talk me out of marble, but I did it anyway. Every tile is slippery when wet but I will need to put out a little mat when it rains or snows — granite is too. The big drawback supposedly for marble is scratching and supposedly it is high maintenance. I decided to do it anyway and it is gorgeous.
But you could also get tumbled marble (unpolished) which would be less slippery. Usually it is mid-price for stone and not as expensive as some of the fancier marbles like calacatta, etc.
I would definitely go with marble rather than granite. It tends to be a little pricier but looks much cleaner IMO.
Not that you asked for this information but marble is very slippery. It looks great but its a little bit rough in new york weather.
You can buy marble tiles for fairly cheap depending upon the kind you pick.
Here is a good site for cost comparison (at the wholesaler level) http://www.stonelocator.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=basicsearch&StoneType=1
Luckily in Brooklyn, there is no shortage of marble suppliers. 🙂
