In 2002, we added a deck to the back of our parlor floor and had an exterior door custom built by Heights Woodworking in the place of a window. The door has leaked ever since it was installed (the saddle they built appears to slope in toward the house) and though Heights Woodworking did come back and put some weather stripping in, water continues to come into the house underneath the door during heavy rainfalls. At this point, the bottom of the door and saddle are rotten and we need to have a new door built. Heights Woodworking has told us that the door was only guaranteed for one year (we sure wish they had told us in 2002 that we were paying all that money for a door that would only be expected to last one year!). Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who will make custom exterior doors (preferably that will last more than 4 years and hopefully someone who stands behind their work)?

  1. If you’re looking for custom solid wood, I would recommend TDC Decorate — they are on 3rd Avenue between 35th & 36th. The doors and trim are solid teak, and come with an exterior finish. The catch is that they do the work in China — so the prices are very reasonable (about as much as ordering a bare solid pine door for Dykes or something), but you’ll need to wait four or five months to actually get the door.
I did the installation myself, so I can’t comment on that aspect, but the product itself was exceptional, especially for the price.

  2. I bought a Door from Dykes Lumber and was installed by a carpenter – and the door warped
Iwas told No Door Company will guarantee a Door more than a year.
If you did not pay for Solid Mahogany that is the reason.

  3. It has only rotted up about 1-2 inches in one corner but the side panels extend all the way to the bottom. There is about 7″ below the glass. I just noticed it getting soft last week and now I see fungus on the wood outside the door.

  4. Basswood for an exterior door? they shoulda known better. white oak or mahogany would have been suitable. Still, there should be at least 7″ of wood below the glass. I can’t believe it’s rotted that far up…and if it has, why did you wait so long?

  5. I have not used him but he did come and give me a very reasonable bid for a door and install -southslope.woodworks – the ad is on the right witht the red background and tree – try him

  6. Yes, William Barnett is a staircase builder, custom mill carpenter and door maker. He is also quite reasonable. His number is 917-327-2661.
