I am hoping to get some feedback on the safety of this neighborhood as my wife and I are interseted in buying here. Obviously the projects are a concern but what neighborhood in NYC isn’t close to a low income housing development. Any insight would be greatly appreciate as we are in our in 20’s and completely priced out of Manhattan. In particular if there is anyone who commutes to Manhattan early in the morning for work that has some insight on a 5am commute would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

  1. My husband and I left DUMBO because we bought a brownstone in Fort Greene (also close to projects). We had wanted to live there for a while and thought that while we looked to buy, we would live out the fantasy before we got too old that it would be a cliche to live in an industrial loft. While we really liked it, we did miss having the services that more established neighborhoods have (more than 4 restaurants, more than 3 bars). In terms of safety issues, like I posted before, it was more often than not, girls who were drunk and lost. After all, there aren’t a whole lot of people who have to or even can get up and out the door by 5AM.

  2. One thing to keep in mind is that Brooklyn runs on car services, not yellow cabs. So if your wife is going to cab it in the morning, one can come right to your door.

  3. Well.. There is one subway. It is a long walk. There are hundreds of fatherless teenage kids. Their collective net worth is less than the downpayment on your condo. Your wife’s engagement ring is worth 5-10k.
    Get insurance.

  4. What made you guys move? I appreciate the info as my main concern is for my wife’s safety. We live on Cornelia Street in the West Village now which is great but I walk her to a cab in the morning as there is always some sketchy folks out early due to the porn shops/tatoo parlors on 6th and close proximity to Washington Square Park. My gut tells me Vinegar Hill would be a great investment but I worry that the obvious projects right there may bite me in the arse. Thanks again.

  5. The area is very hip but can also be desolate. As a lifetime Brooklyn resident, Im pretty liberal consideration of what a “good” area is. I wouldnt be walking alone at 5am there on a regular basis.

Not all areas in Brooklyn are close to housing projects. You might want to expand your search.

  6. I love Vinegar Hill. With the influx of hipsters, lawyers, bankers, etc., you’re about as safe there as Williamsburg. My husband and I lived in DUMBO for a year, two years ago and he had the same early mornings (5:30AM) and while there was the very occasional creepy guy, it was mostly lost, drunk girls he saw wandering around at the York Street F-station at that time of morning.
