I’ve been stressing over the J Manual calculations after a contractor determined the size of the steam boiler by counting radiator columns. That’s what I’ve read at other heating forums. I won’t stress any longer.
We used crossbay plumbing for our new bioler. they did a great job, clean and neat and will answer any questions you have. I’d recomend them, in fact, mention my name if you do call them. Tell them the chinese girl named macy from brooklyn recomennded you.
Master Plumber is right, I missed that it was a steam boiler (sized based on the sq feet of radiating surface available), not a hotwater one, which takes the building envelope into account.
I agree with the comments made in this thread that sizing a boiler properly goes a l-o-n-g way toward maintaining efficiency.
What is irrelevant, however, is how the envelope of a building (insulated walls/window/doors) affects the size of a steam boiler.
The size of a steam boiler is determined solely by the ability of the SYSTEM it serves to transfer and condense steam.
Simply put, a steam heating system contains a specific amount of radiators and pipes.
Those rads and pipes are designed to handle a specific amount of steam for the system to work. Adding or subtracting from that will make the system work less well.
A replacement steam boiler must be sized by adding up all of the radiators in the building, determining their combined direct radiation equivalent, and consulting manufacturer’s literature for the closest matching steam boiler.
I used John Hlad and was very happy.
what Yeshwant said… my boiler was 2.5 times oversized. the new boiler paid for itself in 3 years
Please have them do a heat loss calculation. The old boilers are often twice the size of what you need, especially if you now have new windows, insulation, etc. In this day and age of energy conservation, it really does not make any sense to have a boiler that is larger than you need. Also look into the newer high efficiency gas boilers.
I had boiler replaced via Keystone 5 years ago. Be aware they select an installation company and leave it up to them, Keystone does not take reponsibility. Other than some minor issues, all went well and quickly, including removal of ancient ex-coal burner and oil tank.
As always, *check recommended size*, it will be bigger than you need and therefore more wasteful of energy. I installed 150kbtu steam for semi-detached 4 storey, 3000 sq ft, they recommeded 180kbtu.
