Does anyone have walnut floors? Any complaints? Trying to figure out which wood to choose. If anyone has any opinions at all about any woods, please feel free to express them! Not crazy about oak, and want something medium hued. We’re thinking about bleaching the walnut a little.
Thanks.

  1. Ash is very hard and naturally very blonde. But my favorite is heart pine — even though it’s a so-called “softwood,” it is actually very tough. Especially since most of what’s on the market is made from salvaged timbers which are decades old. Heart pine can also be surprisingly formal in appearance. Visit the Pioneer Millworks website. They are nice people with a good product. We bought both douglas fir (which is pretty but a little soft) and heart pine from them.

  2. Walnut is both beautiful and durable…but very dark. You see alot of walnut trim around the floors of brownstone brooklyn. If walnut is in your budget, but you want something lighter, look for cherry. I’m a woodworker, and it’s my favorite non-exotic wood. Beautiful, durable, easy to work…and smells good too.
