Type of paint for Brownstone exterior
We need to have the exterior of our brownstone repainted and I am not sure what brand to use. I have heard a lot of people using Benjamin Moore but Consumer Reports did not rate it very well. Has anyone painted their exterior recently?

How do I get intouch with Landmarks?
I’m not sure what Landmarks has to say about repainting a landmarked property if it was already painted. I’d check with them anonymously to find out.
To the last Anon, you cannot paint a landmarked brownstone for example, without getting permission from the NYC Landmarks commission (which I don’t think would be granted if it is not already a painted brownstone (i.e. if it is the original stone/brick), and even if it was previously painted, I’m not sure if Landmarks allows you to repaint it or remove the old paint if you want to maintain the facade.
You can repaint as often as you feel like it.It’s your propertie for Ch?#st sake. Just the color needs to match existing.
Paint it’s what ruins the stone, it creates a shield that prevents the stone from ventilation and that causes exfoliation.
Finding the right guy for the right job could be a catch 22.
If you live on a landmark block and your house was painted already, can you repaint?
If you are not on a landmarked block, you can do this, but I suggest you use Silin Paint from Cathedral Stone. It is designed for masonry and lets it “breath” thereby preventing deterioration often associated with painting stone (normal paint retains any moisture in the brownstone or brick, which over time causes the stone or brick to deteriorate). There are numerous posts on this forum in the archives about Cathedral Stone’s Silin paints.
