So, thus far it looks like the consensus is that Gateway is mostly great, but they’re high end, meaning they charge a lot. I’ve checked the posts and it seems like the other folks recommended (John Hlad & Rick Nowak, among them) do good work, too. Who else is good? And are there any anomolies out there (bucking Adam Smith’s wisdom) who offer good, quality service but manage to be reasonably priced?

  1. I had very bad experience with Gateway. They showed up late, did not have the right equipment, the workers did know what to do. After terrible service they also manager to rip me off! I would stay away from them!

  2. I’ve posted on the site before Tri County Mechanical Services

Office 718 366 8463 Sal or Aaron they are both excellent. Licensed reasonable and know what their doing when I have major plumbing to be done my husband and I call the Pro’s and that they are in Plumbing…..

  3. I agree with the poster – Anonymous at October 26, 2006 1:14 PM re: Martin plumbing. They have a lot of kids working there that they send out on calls who don’t have much plumbing experience. Make sure to ask who they are sending and what their experience level is especially for big jobs or hard to find leaks. The youngsters are full of mis-information that could cost you in time, damage and money.

  6. We’ve had good experiences with Weiss, Gateway and Vigilante but all are expensive. I used a cheeap plumber once when Weiss wasn’t available and he did a terrible job. I’ll never stray again from the reputable firms.

  7. john hlaad installed our new boiler incorrectly. we had a steam heat expert come in to help us with pipe banging, otherwise we would never have found out. hlaad came back and fixed things for free, but i never called them again. we’ve used b&d on court street for the past 6 years and are extremely happy with them.

  8. For the love of god, avoid John Hlaad. I had him come to check out my plumbing to make sure everything was in fine working order and when he left (after checking the 4th floor toilet – taking off the lid and watching what happened after flushing) and giving everything a clean bill, we discovered the following morning that a latch had caught in the top floor toilet tank which left it running all night causing considerable water damage to the plaster ceilings and walls and parquet flooring on each floor below. When he came back to “fix” the problem (we were in crisis mode and turned off all the water), he told us that it was just bad luck and that the same thing had happened to him and to submit an insurance claim and recommended that we pick out some new toilets and he would order them for us and then install them. I would spend the extra money (which isn’t all that ‘extra’) and go with Gateway. They were just here to fix a clog and couldn’t have been nicer, more efficient, not to mention, on time.
