my husband and i are about to go into contract on a co-op on eastern parkway. nice pre-war building, sweet details… the place is entirely gutted and a tad bit damaged (we got it just half of the going rate for other apts. in the building). Thing is – we’re new to all of this, and even worse, have been living in hoboken for about 13 years – we have no clue where to turn for a general contractor. i sent in a request through servicemagic.com, but nothing beats a recommendation from people who have hands-on experience. does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations or an idea as to a good source to find a reputable, quality, affordable (licensed) contractor? Also do I need a permit for general interior work?

thanks! you can email me at lolapants at hotmail dot com.

  1. You should check with the coop board about the permit. If they don’t care and the work is minor, no need to get a permit. Otherwise, call the DOB and ask them. They issue the permits.

Regarding contractors, I’d talk to people you know and get personal recommendations. Often the recommendations on this forum are fake (contractors tooting their on horns) and why would you trust an anonymous stranger over a real acquaintance.

Worst case, I’m sure your new neighbors can give you some names.
